Starting the winter clearing

The first trees emerge from the scrub!

I joined John and Sarah today to make a start on clearing the scrubby growth at the bottom end of the Top Fruit plots. Lots of bramble and an overgrown privet hedge were removed leaving 4 trees better exposed for winter pruning. Well three trees anyway – smothered between the two apples (Discovery and Worcester we think) and a cherry is a struggling pear which you can only just see in the photo. It will have to come out – we will try moving it as it is still quite small. We have left a redcurrant bush in place – although overgrown by brambles we might be able to get it back into production. All in all a good start to the winter work.
